Horrorfest 2019: The Mystery of Marie Roget

Directed by Phil Rosen, written by Michel Jacoby, based on the story by Edgar Allan Poe
Starring Patric Knowles, Maria Montez and Maria Ouspenskaya
1942

Another mystery/drama masquerading as a horror film, this flick is adapted from an Edgar Allan Poe story (the sequel to MURDERS IN THE RUE MORGUE, which was turned into a much better Universal horror movie than this one). Famous actress/singer Marie Roget turns up dead and we follow the criminal investigation to figure out who was responsible.

It’s interesting to watch this one back-to-back with DR. Rx because Patric Knowles is on the case again, this time as a medical officer instead of a private detective. Notably, great character actor Maria Ouspenskaya, most famous for her role in THE WOLF MAN, has a supporting role here in sevral of the movie’s best scenes, which are few and far between. It’s mostly boring, but worth it for the moments when Ouspenskaya pops up.
