1939's TOWER OF LONDON, directed by Rowland V. Lee, follows the future King Richard III as he schemes and murders his way through his pesky family all the way to the throne. This flick is half historical epic, covering some ground also covered by some writer named Shakespeare, and half horror film, thanks to the presence of Boris Karloff as the official executioner of the Tower of London, and Richard's faithful sidekick.
The real star here is the great Basil Rathbone as Richard. As usual, he's great at projecting intelligence, in this case a sinister intelligence hell bent on doing anything to get the throne. Among his victims is the equally great Vincent Price as Rathbone's brother (one of the many people standing between Rathbone and the throne).
For a guy who can't get enough of these horror stars, a Universal horror film from the 30s starring Rathbone, Karloff AND Price is just about the height of greatness. It's three of the greats at the height of their powers during the golden age of the studio's output.
