Boher and Sebastian Lelio. Story by Sebastian Lelio. Based on the screenplay by
Gonzalo Maza and Sebastian Lelio. Directed by Sebastian Lelio. Starring
Julianne Moore, John Turturro, Michael Cera and Caren Pistorius. USA/Chile,
2019.
A middle-aged and lonely
divorcee enters into a chaotic relationship with a man who at first seems
romantic, and later seems too much of a slave of his overly dependent
daughters.
An interesting slice of
life examining the day to day existence of a character that is often overlooked
in cinema, a middle-aged woman. Here we get a three dimensional portrait well
played by Julianne Moore (of course) as someone who is both content to enjoy
herself (she loves dancing at the dance club) while also harboring a nagging
feeling that she wants a little more – a romantic relationship, maybe, or maybe
a better connection with her own adult children, who are dealing with their own
issues. Turns out, in the end, she was pretty happy in the first place. That
whole, “don’t go looking any further from your own backyard” thing. She only
needs a relationship with a guy who turns out to be a dick to underline this
and reinforce it for her. I hope she hooks up with someone nice in the future,
but for now she’ll be all right with herself.
