ALONE is one of those movies that takes a pretty simple premise and just runs with it, which is fine by me. Plus, it was shot in Oregon, so I got the added pleasure of recognizing some of the scenery.
Jules Willcox plays a recently widowed woman who’s packed everything up and is moving the hell out. While driving through the Pacific Northwest, she encounters a creepy guy (Marc Menchaca) who seems to keep turning up wherever she goes. First he almost runs her off the road in a dangerous passing incident, then he turns up at motels and gas stations where he won’t leave her alone, and before you know it, she’s chained up in his cabin. She manages to escape, but now she’s stuck trying to survive in the wilderness while he hunts her down.
To the movie’s benefit, there’s not much more to it than that. We don’t get a ton of insight into the killer, played as a frustratingly ordinary guy, and our heroine isn’t some secret survival expert who activates her powers to get out of this. The performances are good, the suspense works and the 98-minute run time means no one’s overstaying their welcome.
