First time I saw the title, LEE CRONIN'S THE MUMMY, I was like, “Who’s Lee Cronin?” So I looked it up and it turns out he’s the guy who did EVIL DEAD RISE which was a surprisingly solid EVIL DEAD movie. So, that was promising.
This latest attempt to revive the classic mummy movie doesn’t have much to do with the originals, or the Hammer movies, or even the Brendan Fraser flick. I’ve never seen the Tom Cruise one but I think it’s safe to guess this one has little in common with that, too.
Jack Reynor and Laia Costa play a married couple whose daughter disappears while they're living in Egypt. Eight years later, they've relocated to New Mexico when they're informed that the girl has been found, alive, inside a sarcophagus recovered from a plane crash. Weird, yes. But, still, they’re glad she’s back.
Of course, the girl (Natalie Grace) isn't quite herself, and the premise that you might mistake a living dead person for a simply malnourished and neglected one is kind of interesting, I have to admit. Anyway, it’s not long before the family’s not only trying to figure out what happened to their daughter in the intervening eight years, but also trying to avoid being murdered by her.
Like EVIL DEAD RISE before it, there’s plenty of gore to go around here, including lots of teeth-stuff. Yikes! The makeup’s good, the effects are good, and I suppose there’s something interesting about trying to take this MUMMY stuff in a new direction, though, this is more of an EXORCIST direction, really. Maybe Lee Cronin really wanted to make LEE CRONIN’S THE EXORCIST? I’d go see that, if he promised not to make it over two hours long.
