Directed by George
Waggner, written by Maurice Tombragel and Victor McLeod
Starring Dick Foran, Leo
Carrillo, Peggy Moran and Fuzzy Knight
1941
A couple of raffish
n’er-do-wells come across half a treasure map leading to an island one of them
just happens to own, and whose brother is trying to buy it out. Unfortunately a
cartographer pegs the map as a fake, so our heroes instead decide to exploit
the island and the old house on it as a treasure hunt for tourists, complete
with “ghosts.”
This Universal horror is
mostly a comedy, with Dick Foran leading up a cast of colorful characters
including Leo Carrillo as a salty sea dog and Fuzzy Knight as his dim-witted
assistant. Once again we’ve got a whodunnit in an “old dark house” and once
again the movie kept me guessing until the end. It’s an easy watch with a light
tone and lots of fun performances and gags.
