Directed by Arthur Lubin,
written by Eric Taylor
Starring Gale
Sondergaard, Brenda Joyce, Kirby Grant and Rondo Hatton
1946
A young woman goes to
work as an assistant for the richest woman in a small town, a blind recluse who
is holed up in her mansion with her brutish manservant. In town, the local
ranchers’ cattle are turning up dead under mysterious circumstances, and the
longer the young woman hangs around the old dark house, the more suspicious she
gets of her mistress who seems to be up to something.
Gale Sondergaard returns,
though not as the same Spider Woman from the Sherlock Holmes movie THE SPIDER
WOMAN, but as another Spider Woman. Sure, the fact that she’s the star of this
movie and it’s called THE SPIDER WOMAN STRIKES BACK might lead you to believe
it’s the further adventures of Holmes’ nemesis, but it’s not. Still, it’s a
pretty entertaining entry into 2nd tier Universal horror, with
Sondergaard once again nailing it as a villain and our buddy Rondo Hatton
turning up to lend his considerable presence to the proceedings.
