Directed by Phil Rosen,
written by Michel Jacoby, based on the story by Edgar Allan Poe
Starring Patric Knowles,
Maria Montez and Maria Ouspenskaya
1942
Another mystery/drama masquerading
as a horror film, this flick is adapted from an Edgar Allan Poe story (the
sequel to MURDERS IN THE RUE MORGUE, which was turned into a much better
Universal horror movie than this one). Famous actress/singer Marie Roget turns
up dead and we follow the criminal investigation to figure out who was
responsible.
It’s interesting to watch
this one back-to-back with DR. Rx because Patric Knowles is on the case again,
this time as a medical officer instead of a private detective. Notably, great
character actor Maria Ouspenskaya, most famous for her role in THE WOLF MAN,
has a supporting role here in sevral of the movie’s best scenes, which are few
and far between. It’s mostly boring, but worth it for the moments when
Ouspenskaya pops up.
