Romancefest 2020: Booty Call

-->
Written by Bootsie and Takashi Bufford. Directed by Jeff Pollack. Starring Jamie Foxx, Tommy Davidson, Vivica A. Fox and Tamala Jones. USA, 1997

Two buddies go out on a double date and spend the night jumping through hoop after hoop in an attempt to get laid, with absurd results.

There’s plenty in this flick that’s dated, and you could write an entire treatise on which jokes wouldn’t fly today and which ones would, but if you look past all that you get a fairly sex positive comedy about two men who want to get laid, and two women who want to get laid, and the things they have to do to make it happen in a responsible manner. It’s this interesting contrast between rated-R comedy and rated-G sentiment, and I guess that’s what keeps it from seeming mean spirited – that and the fact that the men and the women are on at least an even playing field (although the women may actually have the upper hand). This movie’s probably most notable from an early Jamie Fox comedic performance, but the real stand out for me was Vivica A. Fox who, you guess it, should do more comedies.
