Romancefest 2020: Man Up

-->
Written by Tess Morris. Directed by Ben Palmer. Starring Lake Bell, Simon Pegg, Rory Kinnear and Ken Scott. UK/France, 2015.

A socially awkward woman who thinks she’ll never meet Mr. Right takes advantage of a moment of mistaken identity in order to snag someone else’s blind date. Things go great until the truth comes out, and then things get wacky.

This movie benefits from two things: first, the leads are great – Simon Pegg and Lake Bell have great chemistry and are both funny and believable. Secondly, the mix-up plot is only half the movie – instead of saving “finding out the lie” for halfway through act 3, we get about half the movie of what happens AFTER the lie gets found out, and plenty of time to see how things resolve themselves. It’s not just one of those convenient plot misunderstands that is easily fixed in a couple scenes, but a series of comedic scenes unto themselves.
