Romancefest 2020: The Invention of Lying

-->
Written and Directed by Ricky Gervais and Matthew Robinson. Starring Ricky Gervais, Jennifer Garner, Jonah Hill, Louis CK, Rob Lowe and Tina Fey. USA, 2009.

In a world where no one ever lies, one man is inspired to lie, and turns everything upside down.

I’m actually surprised it took me this long to get around to this movie – I’ve seen most of writer/director/star Ricky Gervais’ other stuff, and I remember wanting to see this at the time it came out. Anyway, I’m glad I finally did and in some ways it is fun to see it in retrospect because it is filled with people who would later go on to be even more famous, for better or worse, like Jonah Hill, Tina Fey and Louis CK. This movie pulls double duty, both being a critique of organized religion, which springs naturally out of the invention of lying, and also qualifies for Romancefest with its other plot involving Jennifer Garner’s slow realization that there’s more to choosing your partner than optimizing genetic procreation. Although, as usual, a beautiful woman has to learn to accept a schlub – how come it couldn’t have been about Gervais falling for a non-Jennifer Garner? Whatever, the movie’s heart is in the right place.
